5 Signs You Need a New Roof

A roof is a vital investment—it literally shelters you from the elements. These days, regardless of season, weather events are more frequent and more extreme. That’s why it’s crucial to ensure that your roof is in tip-top shape.

But how can you tell if there are serious issues that need addressing? Here are five things to look for—any of which alone can be reason enough to consider a new roof.

Something’s Growing!

Whether undetected or unaddressed, dirty and improperly maintained shingles can contribute to the presence of moss or algae. Do you see dark streaks or blotches in your roof’s shingles? That’s algae, which can physically compromise the roof structure, as well as decrease the shingles’ practical functions, such as deflecting sunlight and helping to keep interior temperatures consistent.

Water Damage

Dripping water is usually easy to see and hear, and it’s a clear sign that something’s wrong with your roof. If you’re lucky, the problem might be easily remedied, such as repairing improperly installed flashing. But hidden damage—dampness within walls and ceilings—can lead to mold and mildew. It’s harder to detect.

Don’t be shy about checking the attic or floorboards after heavy weather.

Shingles Where they Shouldn’t Be

Time and weather take a toll on all materials, but if you see a shingle or two on the ground around your home—don’t delay in bringing in a roofing pro to assess what you can’t see from street level.

This may be the most obvious, but time sneaks up on everyone—and everything. How old is your roof? Depending on the climate you live in and the type of product on your roof, if your roof is more than 20 years old then you’ll want, at the very least, to have it checked out.
