Spring Cleaning Starts at the Top

New Season, Time-Tested Tips

Spring is the ideal time to freshen up your home’s exterior, especially the roof and siding. Warmer weather and clearer skies make conditions perfect for assessments, cleaning, and preventative care. Let’s stop minor issues now from becoming expensive problems later.

Roof Inspection Checklist

Safety first! We recommend eyeballing your roof from the safety of the ground around your home. If there are parts of the roof you can’t see, please have a local roofer conduct an assessment for you. Here’s what to look for:

  • Shingles: Check for missing, cracked, curling, or loose shingles.
  • Flashing: Inspect flashing around chimneys, vents, and dormers. Damaged flashing can let water seep in.
  • Gutters: Remove debris from gutters and downspouts to ensure proper drainage and prevent overflow and damage.
  • Attic check: After a rain, look in your attic for signs of leaks—water stains, wet insulation, or mold.
Siding Care Tips
  • Cleaning: Vinyl or polymer siding can be easily refreshed with a mild soap and water mix, applied by hand, then rinsed with a garden hose.
  • Avoid high-pressure washing: Power washing can damage siding or cause water to seep behind panels.
  • Stain & mildew removal: For stubborn stains or algae, use a specialized cleaner recommended by your siding contractor. Test it in a discreet area first to make sure it does not discolor your siding.
  • Check for damage: Look for cracks, warping, or gaps—especially around windows and doors—to prevent moisture intrusion.
Proactive Care Prevents Costly Repairs

Schedule inspections twice a year (spring and fall) and also after major storms.  Consistent maintenance helps catch small issues such as loose shingles, failing flashing, or damaged siding before they become big concerns.
